I don't know how gym classes in the US differ from gym classes in South Africa, but I remember from my school days that the exercises were often silly and a bit embarassing, rendering most of the children unwilling to do these exercises in front of their school mates. If you get someone to enjoy something (be it in the privacy of their own home or whatever the case may be) they'll be far more inclined to do it out of their own accord.
